Lichen Striatus (Papular Eruption)

Lichen Striatus treatment

Lichen Striatus is an uncommon type of eczema that is seen in young children. Lichen striatus begins similarly to lichen planus, with small papules, but over a period of days expands to form a long streak or band of affected skin. It is linear in nature, which is quite typical and is itchy.

Lichen striatus is a rash that consists of small raised bumps. It usually involves the arms and legs, but can affect any part of the body. Females are affected two to three times more than males. Lichen striatus condition is seen frequently in children below 16 years but also occurs in adults.

CAUSES

The cause of lichen striatus is unknown. However the lichen striatus is not dangerous or contagious. It occurs mainly in children aged between 5 and 15 years. Lichen Striatus is not related to cancer and it does not involve internal organs.

SYMPTOMS

  • Lichen striatus starts as small pink, red or flesh colored spots that over the course of one or two weeks join together to form a dull red slightly scaly linear band.
  • The band is usually 2mm to 2cm in width and may be a few centimeters in length or may extend the entire length of the limb.
  • Usually there are no symptoms but some patients may complain of slight or intense itching.
  • Sometimes there are two parallel bands. Lesions occur most commonly on one arm or leg but can affect the neck or trunk.
  • Sometimes a band may extend from the leg onto the buttock or abdomen.

TREATMENT

  • There is no specific treatment for lichen striatus. In most patients lichen striatus goes away by itself after six months to one year.
  • Emollients or topical steroids may be used to help treat dryness or itching.
  • Cortisone creams and ointments are also helpful in the treatment of Lichen Striatus.

Lentigo Maligna Melanoma (Dark Skin Lesion)

It is a brown patch, generally on the face of the elderly. This precursor lesion leads to lentigo maligna melanoma. Clinically it is a spreading brown patch, often with considerable variation in color. It is absolutely flat. It can slowly expand for decades. Over time, a nodule can develop within it, lentigo maligna melanoma.

Lentigo maligna melanoma is the least common type and the slowest growing. It generally has a long radial spread time often reaching large diameters of 3-6 cm or greater and confined to the upper skin layer (epidermis). This is the first stage called lentigo maligna and can last for years. During this stage the melanoma remains in situ. For this reason metastasis is rare. The second stage is called lentigo maligna melanoma and begins when the existing lentigo maligna enters a vertical growth phase.

LENTIGO:

Lentigo (pl. Lentigenes) is a common benign condition. It is characterized by areas of melanocyte proliferation, and hyper pigmentation of the epidermal basal cell layer in a linear fashion. Lentigo - a type of freckle that is a small tan, brown, or black spot, which tends to be darker than the usual (ephelis-type) Freckles and which do not fade in the winter. This kind of spot is referred to as lentigo simplex.

SOLAR LENTIGO:

Solar lentigo is the medical term for "liver spots." These brownish, flat, round or oval spots are a result of sun exposure over many years and usually start showing up during 40s. They are not cancerous, but they can be treated for cosmetic reasons.

The risk of lentigo maligna melanoma increases as the number of years of residence in sunnier climate increases, and risk increases with increased hours of exposure to sunlight, increased amount of actinic damage, and a history of non-melanoma skin cancer. Many consider lentigo maligna to be a pre-invasive lesion induced by long-term cumulative ultraviolet injury. Conceptually, the term melanoma is used when atypical melanocytes invade the rich vascular and lymphatic networks of the dermis, thereby establishing metastatic potential. Lentigo maligna is mostly seen in patients 50 to 80 years old and accounts for ten to 15 percent of skin cancer cases.

Differential Diagnosis

* Seborrhic Keratosis
* Pigmented solar keratosis
* Lentigo maligna
* Freckles

TREATMENT

* The doctor may evaluate sites of lentigo maligna, the speed of progression and the general health and fitness of the patient when choosing a treatment.
* Surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy may all be used in the treatment of lentigo maligna.
* Surgery rarely cures the disease, and may be used as a last resort after other treatments have failed.
* After the initial diagnosis, the doctor may recommend the patient be examined every three months for two years, and twice a year thereafter.
* The treatment of choice of lentigo maligna is surgical excision if the lesion is small.
* Radiation therapy is frequently the treatment of choice in the elderly with an extensive lesion.
* These lesions should not be treated with liquid nitrogen cryotherapy, as a rule, because the dysplastic melanocytes go down hair follicles and deep recurrence post-cryotherapy is common

Lentigines (Brown Macule)

Lentigines
Lentigines are black spots that appear on the body unrelated to sun exposure. They are seen in children and in fair skinned people especially those with red hair who have an inherited predisposition for them. Importantly these need to be differentiated from moles becoming skin cancer. Otherwise called as Leopard syndrome, Lentigines Solar and lentigines multiple syndrome

On the face and other areas exposed to the sun they are an inherited characteristic. These small brown marks are most often seen in fair skinned people, especially those with red hair. Known as ephilides, the color is due to pigment accumulating in the skin cells (keratinocytes). Although most frequently called liver spots, they are unrelated to the liver or liver function. They are also called age spots.

CAUSES

Lentigines are inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. Affected people have large numbers of lentigines as the most obvious sign. These are located mostly on the trunk and neck. Affected people also have wide-set eyes, prominent ears, nerve deafness (partial), and cafe-au-lait spots (light brown birthmarks).

The other findings may include mild pulmonic stenosis and changes in the ECG. Affected people may have abnormal genitalia, hypogonadism, or delayed puberty.

SYMPTOMS

The lesions tend to increase in number with age, making them common among the middle age and older population. They can vary in size from 0.2 to 2 cm. These flat lesions usually have discrete borders, are dark in color, and have an irregular shape.

Some of the common symptoms for Lentigines are: -

* A family history of multiple lentigines.
* Prominent ears.
* abnormalities of the sternum or breastbone.
* Wide-set eyes.
* Multiple lentigines on neck and trunk.
TREATMENT

Lentigines are usually benign therefore treatment is not necessary. For cosmetic purposes, some successful treatments include: cryotherapy, hydroquinone preparations, retinoids, chemical peels or lasers.

Some of the common treatment for Lentigines includes :-

* Topical vitamin C treatment is effective for treating sunspots. Topical vitamin C works well when used in combination with alpha hydroxyacids.
* Lentigines can also be treated with an alpha hydroxyacid peel. This involves applying a mild acid to the skin and then allowing the skin to heal. Chemical peels work best in people with blue eyes and light hair, but can be effective in all skin types. This is the second fastest way to get rid of age spots.
* Chemical peels, cryotherapy or certain pigment lasers, can remove lentigines more effectively.

PREVENTION

* Sunscreens should be always used.
* Genetic counseling is recommended for prospective parents with a family history of Lentigines.
* Protective clothing, such as hats and long sleeves should wear to avoid excessive sunlight exposure

Intertrigo (Irritant Dermatitis)

Intertrigo or Irritant Dermatitis

Intertrigo is the word used to describe a rash in body folds. Affected skin is reddened and uncomfortable. Intertrigo is particularly common in those who are overweight. Intertrigo is an inflammation of the top layers of skin caused by moisture, bacteria, or fungi in the folds of the skin. The affected areas are usually pink to brown. Intertrigo commonly affects the axilla, perineum, infra mammary creases, and abdominal folds.

Intertrigo is a red, moist irritation or infection of the crease areas of the body, especially the genito crural (groin) area of more obese individuals. It is due to excessive moisture and friction, and can be infected with Candida albicans.

CAUSES

Intertrigo is common in warm, moist climates. Intertrigo tends to occur in warm, moist areas of the body where two skin surfaces rub or press against each other. It is most common in overweight individuals. This condition may also be seen in people who are restricted to bed rest or in those who wear medical devices that may trap moisture against the skin, such as artificial limbs, splints, and braces.

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of intertrigo can appear wherever the skin falls in folds: usually around the armpits, the belly, the inner thighs, or under the breasts. Chafing causes the skin to become red. Continued chafing creates raw spots, where the skin is broken open. These areas may itch, burn, or sting. Bacteria or yeast can enter through cracks in the skin, causing infection.

TREATMENT

The most important treatment for intertrigo is to keep the area clean and dry. Your doctor may prescribe a cream to treat soreness and itching. Some of the home treatment for intertrigo includes: -

  • Weight loss is helpful in the treatment of intertrigo, which are over weight.
  • Wear cool, loose clothing. Next to the skin, cotton is the best.
  • Aloe Vera gel, ginkgo and green tea extract have antioxidant properties that can aid in healing of intertrigo. One of the best treatments to treat intertrigo.
  • Bacteria may be treated with topical antibiotics such as fusidic acid cream, mupirocin ointment, or oral antibiotics such as flucloxacillin and erythromycin.
  • Soak a washcloth in malva tea and apply it as warm compress to the infected area to reduce inflammation.
  • Yeasts and fungi may be treated with topical antifungals such as clotrimazole and terbinafine cream or oral agents such as itraconazole or terbinafine.

PREVENTION

  • Keeping the area dry and exposed to the air can prevent recurrences.
  • Good general hygiene helps prevent Intertrigo.
  • It also helps to wash daily with an antibacterial soap.

Granuloma Annulare

Granuloma Annulare
Granuloma annulare is a chronic skin condition characterized by small, raised bumps that form a ring with a normal or sunken center. Granuloma annulare is a common condition of unknown cause, which affects the skin of children, teenagers or young adults (or any age group, less commonly). Granuloma annulare is a long-term skin disease consisting of a rash with reddish bumps arranged in a circle or ring.

Granuloma annulare usually does not itch, and may otherwise go unnoticed. Granuloma annulare can occur on any site of the body and is occasionally quite widespread. It only affects the skin and is considered harmless. Granuloma annulare may cause no symptoms, but affected areas are often tender when knocked.

SIGNS

In most of the patients, patches occur on only one or two sites of the body, often on bony areas such as the backs of the hand, elbows or ankles. Typically, the rings slowly grow to 1 or 2 inches across but become flatter and rather more purple in colour as they do so, and then gradually fade.

Deep granuloma annulare favors scalp margins, finger tips and shins. Nodules under the skin have a rubbery feel. They look rather like rheumatoid nodules but arise in people that do not suffer from rheumatoid arthritis.
CAUSES

The cause is unknown, but granuloma annulare does not damage the general health, and is not infectious or due to allergies. Some types of granuloma annulare have been linked with diabetes but this is very uncommon in the ordinary type. It usually affects children and young adults.

SYMPTOMS

In most cases, granuloma annulare causes no symptoms, or a just mild itch at the start of any new area. It can be tender if knocked. The following are the most common symptoms of granuloma annulare. However, each individual may experience symptoms granuloma annulare differently: -

* One or several rings of bumps on feet, legs, or hands.
* Yellowish or skin-colored bumps.
* Granuloma annulare may appear as a firm nodule under the skin of the arms or legs.
TREATMENT

There is no really effective treatment for Granuloma Annulare. In most cases no treatment is required because the patches disappear by themselves in a few months leaving no trace. However, sometimes they persist for years. Some of the treatments for Granuloma Annulare are: -

* A special form of ultraviolet light treatment known as PUVA has also been successful in some people with widespread granuloma annulare.
* Cortisone injections can also be used to treat granuloma annulare. These are more effective than cortisone creams.
* Injections of steroids directly into the rings may also be effective. Some physicians may choose to freeze the lesions with liquid nitrogen.

Common Fungal Rashes and Infections

Common Fungal Rashes and Infections

Exfoliative Dermatitis

Exfoliative Dermatitis
Exfoliative dermatitis is also known as Erythroderma and the red man syndrome. It is not a specific disease and can be seen in both benign and malignant diseases. Idiopathic (unknown cause) cases may persist longer than other types.

It often precedes or is associated with exfoliation (skin peeling off in scales or layers) when it may also be known as exfoliative dermatitis. Erythroderma is slightly more common in men than women.

CAUSES

The causes of exfoliative dermatitis include:-

* Certain medications, such as penicillin, sulfonamides, isoniazid, phenytoin, and barbiturates
* Skin diseases, such as psoriasis
* Lymphomas, or cancers of the lymph nodes

SYMPTOMS

Erythroderma sometimes begins quite explosively and suddenly. Or sometimes it develops slowly, after a person has had a skin disease that gradually gets worse over time. The entire surface of the skin becomes red, scaly, thickened, and sometimes crusted. A person with Erythroderma may:

* Experience severe itching.
* Develop swollen lymph nodes.
* Skin patches.
* Nails become ridged and thickened or may shed.
* Increased heart rate.
* Have a fever.
* Internal malignancies e.g. carcinoma of rectum, lung, fallopian tubes, colon.

TREATMENTS

Treatment for Erythroderma may include:-

* Corticosteroids given through an intravenous line , by mouth, or applied to the skin to decrease the swelling and redness.
* Antihistamines for severe itch.
* Thorough and complete skin care, including cool compresses and creams, such as Vaseline or Eucerin, to help seal the skin and keep in water.

There are some side effects for the treatments of erythroderma which includes the antibiotics may cause stomach upset, diarrhea , and an allergic reaction.

PREVENTION

* Always maintains the moisture skin, avoid scratching, avoid precipitating factors.
* Discontinue all unnecessary medications with the help of your doctor.
* Avoid walk in sun.

It is not a contagious disease.

Ecthyma (Pyogenic Infection)

pyogenic infection of scalp

Ecthyma is a skin infection similar to impetigo, but more deeply invasive. Usually caused by a streptococcus infection, ecthyma goes through the outer layer to the deeper layer of skin, possibly causing scars. Ecthyma is the most serious form of impetigo.

CAUSES

The bacterium Streptococcus is the most common infectious organism associated with ecthyma. Staphylococcus bacteria can also cause ecthyma. The infection may start at the site of an injury, such as a scratch or insect bite, and is often found on the legs.

An ecthyma may begin with a pus-filled blister, similar to that seen in impetigo. However, the infection goes through the outer layer of skin and into the deeper layer. An ulcer with raised borders develops. It is covered by a hard crust. Unlike impetigo, ecthyma can sometimes result in scarring.

SYMPTOMS

Ecthyma lesion usually begins as a small blister or pustule on an inflamed area of skin. A hard crust that is harder and thicker than the crust of impetigo soon covers this. With difficulty, the crust can be removed to reveal an indurated ulcer that may be red, swollen and oozing with pus. Lesions may stay fixed in size and sometimes resolve spontaneously without treatment, or they may gradually enlarge to a sore of 0.5-3 cm in diameter. The areas most affected are the buttocks, thighs, legs, ankle and feet. Occasionally, the local lymph nodes become swollen and painful.

TREATMENT

Treatment depends on the extent and severity of infection. Some of the common treatments for Ecthyma are: -

  • Warm soaks (using a cloth soaked in warm tap water) are helpful for removing crusts.
  • Antiseptic soap or peroxide washes of the lesion may be helpful in hastening recovery.
  • Soak a clean cloth in a mixture of half a cup of white vinegar in a liter of tepid water. Apply the compress to moist areas for about ten minutes several times a day. Gently wipe off the crusts.
  • A topical antiseptic such as povidone iodine, antibacterial Manuka honey or hydrogen peroxide cream may be used instead. Apply it at least three times a day to the affected areas and surrounding skin.

The duration of treatment varies; several weeks of therapy may be necessary to completely resolve ecthyma.

PREVENTION

Cleanse all injuries or bites, and encourage your child to avoid scratching or digging at them.

Dyshidrotic Eczema (Scaly Skin)

Dyshidrotic Eczema or Scaly Skin
Dyshidrotic eczema is a form of eczema often seen on the hands and feet where tiny blisters of serum form just below the skin's surface. Dyshidrotic eczema is a recurrent disease of the palmar and or plantar skin characterized by sudden eruptions of clear, mostly pruritic vesicles. Dyshidrotic eczema may occur in both men and women. Its onset occurs usually before the age of 40. Individuals experiencing emotional stress may be more likely to develop flare-ups of this disease.

CAUSES

The exact cause of Dyshidrotic Eczema is not known. Some consider abnormal sweating causes it. The condition may be mild with only a little peeling, or very severe with big blisters and cracks which prevent work. The first stage shows tiny blisters deep in the skin, associated with itching and a burning feeling. The later and more chronic stage shows more peeling, cracking, or crusting. Some patients will have mostly one stage, and some patients will have mostly the other. Some times both stages occur at the same time. Secondary infection with staphylococcal bacteria is not infrequent. The result is pain, redness, swelling and crusting or pustules.

SYMPTOMS

Common symptoms of Dyshidrotic Eczema are: -

* Intense itching at the site of the blistering.
* Pain may occur with larger blisters.
* Cracks or fissures on the fingers or toes.

TREATMENT

Some of common treatment of Dyshidrotic Eczema are :-

* Soaks or compresses using weak solutions potassium permanganate crystals, aluminium acetate, or vinegar in water, are applied for 15 minutes four times a day. This will dry up blisters. Compresses are not suitable for dry eczema.
* Moisturizers with cream.
* Corticosteroid creams and ointments play an important role in the treatment of Dyshidrotic Eczema.
* Oral anti-pruritics may alleviate itching
* Antibiotics.
* PUVA therapy.

PROGNOSIS

Dyshidrotic eczema normally resolves without problems. Uninhibited scratching and skin trauma may lead to thick, irritated skin, which is more difficult to treat and has a longer healing time.

NOTE: Dyshidrotic Eczema is not contagious and you cannot "catch it" from anyone. It is not a fungus infection, and it has nothing to do with sweating or the sweat glands.

Homemade Solutions to Dry Flaky Skin

Dyshidrotic Dermatitis Skin Lesion

Dry flaky skin is caused by overheating during the winter and air conditioning during the summer — contributes to dryness and itching to the skin.

CAUSES

  • Living in Low humidity.
  • Home heating.
  • Rubbing or drinking alcohol.
  • Certain chemicals and cleaning products, which is not suited to skin.

HOMEMADE SOLUTIONS

  • Use a deep-cleaning honey and almond moisturizing clay mask once a week after exfoliating. This helps maintain a clear complexion and honey and almond moisturizing facemask is particularly good for mature, sensitive, or dry skin.
  • Rub half of an apple on skin to help even out the texture.
  • Apply cream or good moisturizer before go to bed or sleeping.

DYSHIDROTIC DERMATITIS

Dyshidrotic dermatitis (pompholyx) is a form of hand eczema, slightly more common in women, which starts on the sides of the fingers as itchy little bumps and then develops into a rash. The condition can also affect only the feet. Some patients have involvement of both the hands and feet. It is often confused with a fungus.

CAUSES

People who have dyshidrotic dermatitis are genetically predisposed to it. Dyshidrotic dermatitis often appears during times of stress. Smokers have a higher incidence of Dyshidrotic Dermatitis condition. Ingestion of allergens such as chromate, neomycin, quinoline, or nickel may cause some cases.

SYMPTOMS

Some of the common symptoms of Dyshidrotic Dermatitis are: -

  • The rash of dyshidrotic dermatitis occurs on the hands and feet. The majority of cases involve the palms and sides of the fingers, but the soles of the feet can also be involved.
  • The rash looks like crops of clear, deep-seated, tapioca-like vesicles and is very itchy. The vesicles resolve in 3 to 4 weeks and are replaced by 1- to 3-mm rings of scale.

TREATMENT OF DYSHIDROTIC DERMATITIS

Some of common treatment of Dyshidrotic Dermatitis are :-

  • Skin protection is an important part of treatment.
  • Wear heavy-duty gloves when doing heavy work and gardening. Also wear cotton gloves when doing dry housework.
  • Aluminum subacetate, or Burrow's Solution, is a drying soak that can be used if the lesions ooze.
  • Antibiotics may be needed if the skin is broken and infection is suspected.
  • Rings often worsen dermatitis by trapping irritating materials beneath them. Remove your rings when doing housework and before washing your hands.
  • Oral methotrexate can be used in severe cases of Dyshidrotic Dermatitis.
  • If you have a tendency to develop dyshidrotic dermatitis of the feet, you should wear socks, which are at least 60% cotton. You should change your shoes everyday. Alternate 2-3 pairs of shoes, so the shoes will dry out completely before you use them again.
  • Aluminum chloride 20% (Drysol) may help in cases made worse by sweating.
  • Avoid direct contact with turpentine, paint thinner and paints. Also polishes for furniture, metal, floors, and shoes. When using them, wear heavy-duty gloves because they contain irritating solvents.

Dermatofibroma (Noncancerous Bump)

Dermatofibroma
A dermatofibroma is a common, noncancerous, button-like, 3 mm to 10 mm brown bump (papule), frequently seen on the lower extremities. They grow more rapidly than moles--over a few months. Also called a fibrous histiocytoma. The cause is unknown but current thinking suggests that they develop from minor trauma like an insect bite. If removed and analyzed microscopically, dermatofibromas are found to contain very dense collagen. There is no pressing need to remove them.

A dermatofibroma consists of a proliferation of scar-like tissue within the deeper layers of the skin.

CAUSES

The right cause of dermatofibroma is unknown. They are usually single but sometimes may be multiple. Here are Dermatofibroma causes may include :-

* Insect Bite
* Folliculitis
* Idiopathic benign skin tumor

SIGNS

Dermatofibroma most often occur on the legs and arms. Once developed, they usually persist for years. They appear as firm-feeling nodules, often yellow-brown in colour, sometimes quite dark, especially in dark coloured skin. Dermatofibromas feel like hard lumps under the skin. If the skin over a dermatofibroma is squeezed a dimple forms, indicating tethering of the skin to the underlying fibrous tissue.

SYMPTOMS

Often Dermatofibroma start out as red, turning later to brown, and sometimes itch. They probably are a reaction to a minor injury, such a bug bite or a splinter. Dermatofibromas usually develop slowly and usually appear on the lower legs. These small, hard, raised skin growths can have various characteristics:

* Usually found on the lower legs, but may appear on the arms or trunk
* Small firm Papule, Plaque or Nodule
* May be red, pink, purplish, gray or brown and may change colors over time
* May be as small as a BB pellet but rarely grow larger than a fingernail
* Often painless but may be tender, painful or itchy
* Usually dimple inward when pinched.
* Skin dimples downward with lateral compression

DIAGNOSIS

Most often, a physician can diagnose a dermatofibroma by examining the nodule. If the growth does not look like a typical dermatofibroma, if a bleeding sore appears on its surface, or if the physician wants to be certain of the diagnosis, he or she performs a biopsy. A biopsy removes either a portion or all of the nodule for examination under a microscope. Some of differential diagnosis are :-

* Primary Malignant Melanoma
* Blue Nevus
* Scar

TREATMENT

Dermatofibromas do not require treatment because they do not pose any risk. Some patients may prefer to have their dermatofibromas removed because when dermatofibromas get in the way of shaving or become irritated by clothing. Here are some removal methods of dermatofibroma:

* Liquid nitrogen freezing destroys only the upper part of the growth. Therefore, the dermatofibroma, after some years, may again become noticeable. Usually any regrowth is slight and can be handled by another freezing.
* Dermatofibroma are best ignored. If the diagnosis is uncertain, a piece may be removed for tissue analysis.
* Dermatofibroma can be removed surgically, but since they are deep, this usually leaves a scar.
* Liquid nitrogen freezing destroys only the upper part of the growth. Therefore, the dermatofibroma, after some years, may again become noticeable. Usually any regrowth is slight and can be handled by another freezing.

PROCEDURES

* Surgically.
* Freezing.

Because a dermatofibroma grows deep, total surgical removal requires cutting it out below the surface level of the skin. This process usually leaves a noticeable scar. Alternatively, the nodule may be flattened to the surface of the skin by shaving the top off with a surgical knife or by freezing it with liquid nitrogen. In both of these procedures, the top layers of the dermatofibroma are destroyed, but the deeper layers remain. The nodule may grow back again after several years. If a growth that was thought to be a dermatofibroma grows or bleeds, or if there is any concern that it may be a skin cancer, the growth should be biopsied.

Dehydrated Skin and Dermatitis Herpetiformis (Itchy Skin)

Dehydrated skin
Dehydration means your skin is lacking moisture but not oil. Surface dehydration is a crippling enemy of the skin affecting up to 98% of the populations in varying degrees, and is associated with problems as diverse as scaly, taut skin, superficial lines & premature aging. In dehydrated skin, the skin becomes tight and irritated.

HOME TREATMENT

* At least once a week treat yourself to a re-hydrating home made clay facemask for dry skin.
* For dehydrated, parched lips you can use glycerin and milk cream.
* Smoking will devitalize and dehydrate your skin. Even if you don't smoke, environments such as nightclubs and bars, can affect your skin. Always ask to be seated in the non-smoking section in restaurants, and don't allow smoking inside your house.
* Mix 2 drops of lavender oil with baking soda & water until it becomes a paste. Put on face & leave on for 5 minutes. Rinse. Moisturize. This light, exfoliating mask makes skin more receptive to moisture.
* Wash only with tepid water (hot water causes moisture evaporation).
* Drink at least 8 - 10 glass of water daily.
* Boil ½ Cabbage in 3 cups of water for about 10 minutes (boiling). Strain and cool the water. Wash face with the cool cabbage water. It’s great for nourishing the Skin. The nutrients from the cabbage nourish.

DERMATITIS HERPETIFORMIS

Dermatitis herpetiformis is a very itchy type of dermatitis associated with intestinal and immune consumption of dairy products or gluten. Dermatitis herpetiformis usually shows up in young adults, and is more common in men.

Dermatitis herpetiform looks like small clusters of red, itchy bumps. There are tiny water blisters, but these are quickly scratched off. Before they form, the area usually has a burning feeling. They scab and heal over one or two weeks, but new spots continue to appear. Dermatitis herpetiformis is a lifelong condition, but remission may occur in 10 to 20 percent.

CAUSES

Dermatitis herpetiformis usually begins in the twenties, though children may sometimes be affected. It is seen in both men and women. Though the cause of the rash is unknown, dermatitis herpetiformis is frequently associated with gluten (a protein found in cereals) sensitivity in the small bowel.

SYMPTOMS

The common symptoms of dermatitis herpetiformis are: -

  • Intense burning.
  • Stinging and itching around the elbows, knees, scalp, buttocks and back.
  • Symptoms of dermatitis herpetiformis tend to wax and wane.

TREATMENT

  • Dapsone, an antibiotic, may help the majority of patients, but has side effects.
  • Oregon grape root detoxifies the body and reduces inflammation.
  • To relieve itching and promote healing, mix goldenseal root powder with vitamin E oil, and then add a little honey until it has a consistency of paste. Apply this mixture to the affected area. This will helps to reduce itching and heal dermatitis herpetiformis.
  • Ultra potent topical steroids may helpful.
  • Massage tea oil antiseptic cream into the skin after contact with water or irritants.

PREVENTION TIPS

  • Avoid eggs, peanuts, wheat and dairy products.
  • Use a perfume-free moisturizing lotion daily.
  • Try keeping your house humidified and take fewer shower and baths. Shower and baths deplete the skin of it's natural oil.

Cold Cream (Calendula Cream)

Calendula Cream

The Calendula Cream is perfect for the winter weather - chock full of good ingredients for your hands, cuticles, elbows, heels & other areas prone to dryness when the weather turns. People especially like it because of the infused calendula oil, but you can use plain extra virgin olive oil if you don’t have the herbs. If you use calendula oil, your cream will have a nice golden texture.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ounce calendula infused extra virgin olive oil (or plain olive oil)
  • 1 ounce shea butter
  • 1 ounce mango butter
  • 1/2 ounce avocado oil
  • 1/4 ounce jojoba oil
  • 1/4 ounce beeswax

Procedure:

  • Melt all ingredients over a low flame in a double boiler until the beeswax is nearly completely melted. Remove from heat.
  • Stir to melt the rest of the beeswax and to fully incorporate all the ingredients.
  • Use a handheld mixer to mix the ingredients together at high speed. This will whip up the ingredients, especially the shea and mango butters, and add a bit of air to help promote more of a a whipped texture for the finished product. You can add fragrance and/or essential oil at this time (about 1/2 teaspoon or so should suffice depending on your preference), but I prefer the natural scent of the calendula by itself.
  • Pour into jars while the mixture is still warm and pourable. Label and enjoy!

How To Treat A Burn

How To Treat A Burn

A serious burn on the skin is one of the most traumatic injuries that the body can sustain. Burns are one of the most common household injuries. The skin is the body's largest organ, and one of its most complex system. Among other things, it helps to regulate temperature and it serves as the first line of defense against infection.

Common Causes

* Contact with flames or hot objects.
* Electrical burns.
* Chemical burns.
* Sunburn.

FIRST AID- HOME TREATMENT

* To give first aid at home to treat burn, apply cold water (not ice water) or compress immediately.
* The cold water eases the pain and reduces the amount of skin damage.
* Apply the cold for at least five minutes.
* For chemical burns to the mouth or eyes require immediate medical evaluation after thorough flushing with water.
* Electrical burns often result from small children playing with electrical outlets.
* If an electrical burn occurs, immediately disconnect the power source and pull the victim away from the source using a dry, non-metallic object such as a broom, rope, chair, or cushion.
* Don't use your bare hands.

Here are some home remedies to treat burn.

* Aloe vera pulp, gel, or liquid can be applied to the burn as needed to relieve pain and to speed healing.
* Apply ice pack or cloth soaked in ice water and change them constantly.
* Horsetail and slippery elm help skin tissues to heal.
* Tea tree oil is effective for minor burns, primarily as an antiseptic and to help soothe the burned area. It is safe for children and adults.
* Apply fresh ginger juice or strong black tea to the burned area, using cotton balls or a compress.
* Bayberry, black or green tea, blackberry leaves, sumac leaves, sweet gum, and white oak bark contain tannic acid, which has been used in clinics for surface bums that have begun to heal. These herbs can be used as teas and as wet compresses.

PREVENTION TIPS

* Hygiene (sterility) is very important when dealing with any type of burn.
* Keep matches and electrical items out of reach of children and babies.
* Use sunscreen lotion to treat with sunburn.
* Keep burn injuries elevated to minimize swelling and promote healing. This is especially important for burns on the hands, legs, or feet.
* For acid or chemical bums, use baking soda or apple cider vinegar added to warm water. Apply the mixture to the affected area using a thoroughly clean cloth. If possible, soak the burned area in this liquid. With either method covering or soaking-apply the mixture for five minutes once a day.

Anti-aging Skin Care Treatment

Anti-aging Skin Care Treatment

Growing old is not an illness, but the passing years do make the body more open to to disease. The body's cells stop dividing after they have divided between twenty and thirty times. New cells must be made to replace those that stop dividing, a process that: slows with age. When there are no longer enough new cells to replace the ones that have died or suffered damage, the result is aging. Studies reveal that cells that stop dividing, change form and release damaging proteins that harm bodily tissues, further contributing to the aging process. Many researchers still maintain that it is our chosen lifestyles that accelerate aging, rather than genetics or other factors.

The free radical theory of aging has been the subject of a great deal of research in recent years and has been gaining increasing acceptance. Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms that are extremely unstable and highly reactive. If they are present in excessive amounts, they begin attacking the body on the cellular level. Free radicals attack the cells protective membranes and genetic material, causing cellular damage and malfunction. To make matters worse, the immune system may then attack the damaged cells as if they were foreign invaders.

Because they are so chemically reactive, free radicals exist for only one-millionth of a second each. This has made it difficult for researchers to study them directly. But are millions of them, and even with their short life's they do considerable damage to our cells. One researcher has postulated that many of the degenerative disorders we associate with aging, including cancer and hardening of arteries, are not inevitable results of the passage of time, but rather are the result of the breakdown of nucleic acids, proteins, and cell structures caused by the presence of free radicals. He asserted that the phenomenon we refer to as aging is in fact nothing more than the ever-increasing accumulation of changes caused, or contributed to, by the pre of oxygen-based free radicals, Thus, though oxygen gives us life, it can also be our greatest enemy.

A significant number of problems faced by people over the age of sixty may also be attributable to nutritional deficiencies. Many elderly people have mal absorption problems, in which the nutrients in food are not properly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. As we age, our bodies do not assimilate nutrients as well as they have once did. As the body ages, its system slow down and become less efficient, so the correct nutrients are more important than ever for the support, repair and regeneration of the cells.

There are many disorders associated with an inability to absorb nutrients successfully. One study of older people living in an urban area found that 90 percent of those examined had an inadequate intake of vitamins B1 (thiamine) and B6 (pyridoxine), and 30 to 40 percent demonstrated deficiencies of vitamin A, vitamin B3 (niacin), vitamin B12, vitamin C, calcium, and iron. Only 10 percent of the subjects consumed adequate amounts of protein. Many people in hospitals and other confined environments are deprived of sunlight, making them deficient in Vitamin D. A diet that lacks essential nutrients over a long period of time leads to a greater risk of degenerative disease.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is a particular problem. A lack of vitamin B12 can lead to the development of neurological symptoms ranging from tingling sensations, inability to coordinate muscular movements, weakened limbs, and lack of balance, to memory loss, mood changes, disorientation, and psychiatric disorders. Symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency can easily be misinterpreted as signs of senility. Many older people become deficient in vitamin B12 because they do not produce adequate amounts of stomach acid for proper digestion. This creates a perfect environment for the overgrowth of certain bacteria that steal whatever vitamin B12 is extracted from protein in the digestive tract. Other people do not produce enough of a substance called intrinsic factor, without which vitamin B12 cannot travel from the stomach to the rest of the body, even if nothing else is standing in its way.

One can have vitality & a zest for living at any age. Please don’t assume that pain and illness are inevitable parts of aging. You can feel better at sixty than you did at thirty by making healthy changes in your diet and lifestyle. Adding the right supplements should give you the added power needed to boost immunity and prevent or cure most disorders-not to mention making you able to work or play longer than people much younger than you are. Looking youthful for your age is an added bonus. But remember: It takes years for these problems to develop, so it usually takes some time to resolve them as well. There are no silver bullets or magic potions, only the simple fact that if you give your body the correct fuel, it will perform for you and protect against illness.

Most of the supplements listed below can be found in complexes containing many nutrients. Be sure to check the amounts of different nutrients in your multi nutrient supplements, and either exclude individual nutrients or adjust the dosages, as appropriate. For best absorption of nutrients, use as many sublingual (under the tongue), liquid, and powdered supplements as possible. It makes sense for older adults to use nutrients in drink form, but there are many good supplements in powder and liquid forms as well.

Vitamin Supplement for Anti aging

  • Dandelion and milk thistle promote good liver function and bile flow.
  • Taking 4,000-1,000 mg daily Vitamin C with bioflavonoid in divided doses is helpful.
  • Green tea aids in cancer prevention and is a powerful antioxidant.
  • Licorice root is an effective anti-inflammatory and antiallergenic agent that supports the organ systems.
  • Bilberry and ginseng are good for giving extra energy, improving brain function, increasing circulation, and promoting better blood flow to supply oxygen to the cells. Bilberry also protects the eyes.
  • Saw palmetto aids in preventing cancer and, for men, in improving non cancerous prostate enlargement. It helps in the inhibition of enlargement of the prostate gland.
  • Include more raw vegetables, fruits, grains, seeds, nuts, and quality protein such as fish and soy foods. Consume less animal protein. Include in your diet broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, fish, fruits, whole grains, nuts, oats, seeds, and soybeans. Avoid processed foods. Always try to eat balanced diet. Drink enough amount of water also.
  • Include in your diet garlic, onions, shiitake mush rooms, and pearl barley. These foods are good sources of germanium, potassium, and many other nutrients that lessen free radical damage and act as catalysts in the supply of oxygen to oxygen-poor tissue.
  • Nettle is full of vital minerals and is good for hypoglycemia, allergies, arthritis, depression, prostate and urinary tract disorders, and a host of other problems.
  • Taking vitamin B3, 3 times daily is important in proper functioning of the nervous system.
  • Wild yam contains natural steroids that have a rejuvenating effect. Steroids are what help exercise to melt off more weight and build muscle. This hormone is found in the human body as dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). Take larger amounts-2,400 mg daily, dropping to 1,600 mg daily-for two weeks, then stop for two weeks.

Prevention

  • Learn how to relax and keep yourself active and be enthusiastic about life. By keeping up your appearance, exercising every day, & being involved in hobbies and other activities, you can keep your mind active. This is most important.
  • Don't ever smoke or overexpose yourself to harmful chemicals such as environmental pollutants.
  • Proper rest is important. Have enough sleep.
  • Improve your blood's oxygenation and circulation with deep breathing exercises & yoga (pranayama). Try to hold your breath for thirty seconds every half hour. Inhale and hold for thirty seconds, then place your tongue on the roof of your mouth where your teeth meet your gums and release the air slowly. Repeat this exercise every day.
  • Many older adults complain of sleep difficulties. One common cause is the consumption of sugar after dinner. Complex carbohydrates have a relaxing effect. A good nighttime snack is popcorn, or nut butter and crackers. Protein, on the other hand, promotes alertness, so it should be consumed earlier in the day.

Depigmentation (Albinism)

Depigmentation Albinism

It refers to a group of inherited conditions. People with albinism have absent or reduced pigment in their eyes, skin or hair. They have inherited genes that do not make the usual amounts of a pigment called melanin which is essential for the full development of the retina. Lack of melanin in development of the retina is the primary cause of visual impairment in albinism.

There are 10 types of the most common form of the condition, known as "oculocutaneous albinism," which affects the eyes, hair, and skin. In its most severe form, hair and skin remain pure white throughout life. People with a less severe form are born with white hair and skin, which turn slightly darker as they grow. Everyone with oculocutaneous albinism experiences abnormal flickering eye movements (nystagmus) and sensitivity to bright light. There may be other eye problems as well, including poor vision and crossed or "lazy" eyes (strabismus).

The second most common type of the condition is known as "ocular" albinism, in which only the eyes lack color; skin and hair are normal. There are five forms of ocular albinism; some types cause more problems-- especially eye problems--than others.

Causes of Albinism

Albinism is not a contagious disease. Its unlike a cold or the flu; it's caused by a person's genes. The main problems of albinism are caused by the inability of the body to produce melanin pigment. It also has a role in the development of normal vision of the eye.

Albinism is mostly a recessively inherited disease, which means that you have inherited two albinism genes (one from each parent). If your parents are only carriers of albinism (each having one albinism gene and one normal gene) they will have enough genetic information to make normal pigment & will not show any signs of albinism.

Albinism of the eyes is called ocular albinism. Skin color is usually normal and eye color may be in the normal range usually in this form of albinism. However, examination of the eye will show that there is no pigment in the retina. Individuals with albinism generally have white hair and pale skin which makes them stand out. Often hair pigmentation is not completely absent but shows a pale or medium blonde. Often the affected persons are paler in complexion as the rest of the family. The myth that all persons with albinism have "white hair and red eyes" is not true.

Symptoms of albinism

Symptoms of albinism can involve the skin, hair, and eyes. The skin, because it contains little pigment, appears very light, as does the hair. People with albinism can have irises varying from light gray or blue to brown. Some common symptoms of albinism includes:

  • Absence of pigment from the hair, skin, or iris of eyes.
  • Patchy absence of pigment
  • Lighter than normal skin and hair or complete albinism.

Other possible symptoms:

  • Rapid eye movements (nystagmus).
  • Strabismus (eyes not tracking properly).
  • Photophobia (avoidance of light because of discomfort).
  • Decreased visual acuity.
  • Functional blindness.

Treatment

It depends on the extent of the disorder. It can only be treated, not cured, the eye problems that often accompany the lack of skin color. Glasses are usually needed and can be tinted to ease pain from too much sunlight. There is no cure for involuntary eye movements (nystagmus), and treatments for focusing problems (surgery or contact lenses) are not effective in all cases.

  • Crossed eyes (strabismus) can be treated during infancy, using eye patches, surgery or medicine injections. Treatment may improve the appearance of the eye, but it can do nothing to cure the underlying condition.
  • Patients with albinism should avoid excessive exposure to the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If exposure can't be avoided, they should use Ultraviolet A-Ultraviolet B sun blocks with an SPF of at least 20. Taking beta- carotene may help provide some skin color, although it doesn't protect against sun exposure.

Albinism Prevention

  • Genetic counseling should be considered for individuals with a family history of albinism or hypo pigmentation.
  • Astigmatism - An eye condition in which the lens doesn't focus light evenly on the retina, leading to problems with visual sharpness.
  • Gene - The basic unit of genetic material carried in a particular place on a chromosome. Genes are passed on from parents to child when the sperm and egg unite during conception.

Acne Scar and Age Spots face removal

Acne and age spots face removal

Acne usually begins with blackheads. Acne is common in adolescence, when raging hormones stimulates the sebaceous glands and they become more active. But hormonal imbalances can also trigger acne well after a women passes through puberty.

Acne or pimples may be caused by wrong food habits and improper skin care. Homemade beauty recipes like face packs, facial masks, scrubs, hair care, dandruff care and body wraps based on herbs and natural ingredients help improve the skin disorders and detoxify. They help in providing natural oil and moisture to the skin.

AGE SPOTS

Age spots are flat brown spots that can appear anywhere on the body as it ages. They are also called liver spots. Mostly, age spots appear on the face, neck, & hands. These brown spots in themselves are harmless, but they can be a sign of more serious underlying problems. They are the result of a buildup of wastes known as lipofuscin accumulation, a byproduct of free radical damage in skin cells . These spots are actually signs that the cells are full of the type of accumulated wastes that slowly destroy the body's cells, including brain md liver cells. In other words, they are a surface sign of free radical intoxication of the body that may affect many internal structures as well, including the heart muscle and the retina.

Causes

Poor dieting , lack of exercise, smoking, poor liver function, the ingestion of oxidized oils over a period of time, and, above all, excessive sun exposure are the factors which lead to the formation of age spots. Exposure to the sun causes the development of free radicals that may damage the skin. Most people who have significant numbers of age spots live in sunny climates or have had excessive sun exposure. The formation of lipofuscin is associated with a deficiency of a number of important nutrients, which includes vitamin E, selenium, glutathione, chromium, and dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE). Alcohol consumption increases lipofuscin formation. One study found that animals fed alcohol over a period of eighteen months had twice the amount of lipofuscin on their brain cells as control animals in the control group.

Treatment

  • Burdock, milk thistle, and red clover aid in cleansing the bloodstream. This helps in removal of age spots.
  • Eat a diet high in vegetable protein and that consists of 50 percent raw fruits and vegetables, plus fresh grains, cereals, seeds, and nuts. Be aware that seeds and nuts become rancid quickly when subjected to heat and/or exposed to the air. Purchase only raw nuts and seeds that have been vacuum sealed.
  • Emu oil has shown good results on brown spots and helps to get rid of age spots.
  • Ginkgo biloba improves circulation and is a potent antioxidant.
  • Do not use hydrogenated cleansing creams & hardened creams. Cleanse your skin with pure olive oil and a warm wet washcloth and then rinse with lemon juice and water.
  • This works for some people: At night, saturate a cotton ball with pure lemon juice and put it over the spots (but do not apply it near the eyes). There may be some tingling, but only for a few minutes. If there is no sign of irritation, apply morning and night.
  • Brown or yellow spots can usually be eliminated by freezing them off. During a painless in-office procedure, the doctor brushes liquid nitrogen on the spots with a cotton swab. In two seconds the cells freeze, and within five days, cells flake away, and permanent results occur. Alternatively, a doctor can burn the spots off with acid applied directly to the spots, or remove them using laser light. With this process, there is no lightening of the skin after removal is completed.
  • Limit sun exposure.
